What this page helps you decide: why finding Gray is the first thing to do after the tutorial rather than something you get around to later.

Gray is the first character you meet and the one who unlocks the most. He appears in the tutorial, where he saves you and then hands you a base weapon of your own choosing, and afterwards he stands in the main town near the Forge beside a few rocks and a tree. Talking to him opens the skill tree and starts the main quest chain, which walks through upgrading equipment, forging equipment, levelling and clearing dungeons. It is also the prerequisite for the second weapon slot, which is why every beginner route in this game starts with the same instruction: find Gray. His name is spelled two ways across guide sites, and there is a decisive piece of evidence for which one is right.

Gray or Grey, and the weapon that settles it

Two of the three third-party guide sites spell him Grey. The community wiki that carries the NPC roster spells him Gray throughout, and the official Starless Forest guide refers to talking to Gray. The decisive evidence is not spelling in prose at all: the official weapon template contains an item called Gray's Sword, among 113 weapon names. An item name is game data rather than an editor's choice, so it outranks any number of guide pages using the other spelling. We use Gray everywhere on this site. It is still worth knowing the alternative, because searching for Grey returns a different set of results, and both sets are describing the same character.

What the starter weapon actually is

There is a genuine open question here. The community wiki says Gray gives you a base weapon of your choosing during the tutorial. The official progression guidance describes your first real weapon as a light weapon forged from 3 ore, producing roughly 14 base attack from a pure early ore. A third source claims new players pick between a sword, a hammer and a spear before the tutorial, but that page returned an access error when we tried to read it, so we only have a search summary of it and will not present it as fact. The two descriptions we can verify are not necessarily in conflict - a chosen base weapon and a first forged weapon are different objects - but nobody has published a page that reconciles them explicitly.

Why the second weapon slot matters that much

One of the official Beastiary's general rules is to swap weapons once after every skill cycle, which is impossible with a single weapon equipped. Another is that a fast secondary weapon pairs well with a main weapon in the Endless Tower, where the published advice says loadout matters more than raw character level. And the official Frozen Valley route treats a heavy secondary weapon as a step in its own forging sequence, recommending it during Penitent difficulty because heavy weapons bring high damage and a default ultimate that grants damage immunity. All three of those depend on the slot that this one conversation opens, which is why every route puts it first.

Step-by-Step

  1. Go to him immediately after the tutorial. He is beside the Forge, near a small cluster of rocks and a tree, in the main town.
  2. Choose the first dialogue option, I want to check skill., to open the skill tree. The other two options are Who are you?, which is backstory about him surviving a great war long ago and keeping the fire of hope alive, and Bye.
  3. Talk to him before queueing anything, because this conversation is the necessary condition for unlocking your second weapon slot.
  4. Work his quest chain as your early route. It hands out objectives in order: upgrade equipment, forge equipment, gain levels, and clear dungeons.
  5. Use the skill tree with your weapon family in mind. The official skills template groups skills into six families - Light, Staff, Heavy, Bow, Fist and Sickle - with seven skill slots each.
  6. Come back to the tree after Season III's scroll preview change, which lets you look at what a scroll skill does before committing resources to it.

Tips & Notes

  • The skill tree's six families include one called Sickle, which every guide site and update log calls the Scythe - the same weapon family under two names.
  • The official skills template was last edited on 3 August 2026 and contains no firearm group, which fits the Gun weapons arriving with Update 11.2 on 21 or 22 August.
  • If a guide tells you to talk to Grey near the forge, it means the same NPC; only the spelling differs.
