Enchanting: Rune Slots and Costs
What this page helps you decide: which of your three enchant slots each rune should go in, and what the full set will cost in gold.
Enchanting is the third and least understood of the three upgrade systems, separate from forging and from blessing. You do it at Milo, who stands inside the Enchant building to the left of Quill, and you choose Enchant Equipments from his menu. Three pieces can carry a rune: your weapon, your helmet and your body armour. Two published numbers make this system easy to plan around and both are absent from every competing page we read. The first is the gold ladder: enchanting costs 2,400 at rune level 1 and rises by exactly 1,200 per level to 7,200 at level 5, and the cost depends only on the rune's level, never on the piece you are enchanting. The second is slot effectiveness: a rune pays its full value on a weapon, 60 percent on body armour and 40 percent on a helmet. Together they tell you exactly what a full three-slot set of any rune level costs and what it is worth.

The cost ladder is an arithmetic sequence
The five published enchant costs are 2,400, 3,600, 4,800, 6,000 and 7,200 gold for rune levels 1 through 5. The gap between each pair is exactly 1,200, which means the whole ladder collapses to a single expression: cost equals 1,200 multiplied by the rune level plus one. That fits all five published rows exactly, and the wiki's own worked example agrees, quoting 7,200 gold to put a level 5 Corrode rune onto a heavy weapon. If the sequence continues, a level 6 rune would cost 8,400 and a level 7 would cost 9,600. We are flagging those two figures as our extrapolation and not as published data, because no source lists a rune above level 5 and the pattern could stop at any point.
What a full kit costs at each rune level
Because the cost depends only on rune level, the total for filling all three slots is simply three times the ladder value. A full level 1 set costs 7,200 gold, level 2 costs 10,800, level 3 costs 14,400, level 4 costs 18,000 and level 5 costs 21,600. Set against the slot multipliers, that gives you a clean way to think about the helmet slot: it costs exactly as much to enchant as the weapon slot but returns 40 percent of the value instead of 100 percent. Filling all three slots with the same rune gives you 2.0 times a single weapon-slot copy for 3.0 times the gold, which is still worth doing for effects that stack, and worth reconsidering for effects that do not.
What the wiki does not cover
Two gaps are worth naming. The enchant page carries a heading for fusing runes with no text underneath it, so no source we could reach explains how fusion works or what it produces. And no source at any level publishes the actual proc chance, damage, duration or tick interval of any rune. Every description is qualitative: the chance and the magnitude vary with rune level, and that is all anybody says. We would rather leave those blanks visible than fill them with numbers we cannot support. Taking a rune back off is covered, and the answer is unpleasant: the Rune Crack item removes a rune from a piece of gear and destroys the rune in the process.
Step-by-Step
- Talk to Milo in the Enchant building, immediately left of the merchant Quill, and pick Enchant Equipments from the dialogue.
- Put your strongest rune on the weapon. That slot pays 100 percent of the rune's rolled value while body armour pays 60 percent and a helmet pays 40 percent.
- Budget the gold from the rune's level, not from the item. Level 3 runes cost 4,800 gold each to fit, so a full set of three costs 14,400 regardless of whether the pieces are light or heavy.
- Buy from the grocery shop when you are short. The shop stocks level 3 Frost, Corrode and Methysis runes at 3,000 gold each, so a complete level 3 kit bought and fitted costs 9,000 plus 14,400, which is 23,400 gold.
- Do not upgrade a rune you are happy with. Raising a rune's level rerolls every hidden value it has, and a higher level only widens the range rather than guaranteeing an improvement.
Data Tables
| Rune level | Cost per enchant | Step from previous | Full three-slot set |
|---|---|---|---|
| Level 1 | 2,400 | - | 7,200 |
| Level 2 | 3,600 | +1,200 | 10,800 |
| Level 3 | 4,800 | +1,200 | 14,400 |
| Level 4 | 6,000 | +1,200 | 18,000 |
| Level 5 | 7,200 | +1,200 | 21,600 |
Per-enchant costs come from the wiki enchanting page, last edited 2026-06-21. The step and set columns are our arithmetic. The wiki's own example of a level 5 Corrode rune at 7,200 gold matches the table exactly.
| Slot | Share of the rune's value | Value from one rune worth 10 | Cost at rune level 5 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Weapon | 100% | 10.0 | 7,200 |
| Body armour | 60% | 6.0 | 7,200 |
| Helmet | 40% | 4.0 | 7,200 |
Percentages are published on the wiki rune page, last edited 2026-07-29; the weapon figure comes from the page text and the two armour figures from the data template. The value column is our worked example on an arbitrary rune worth 10, since no source publishes real rune values.
FAQ
Does enchanting cost more on better gear?
No. The published cost depends only on the level of the rune you are fitting, from 2,400 gold at level 1 to 7,200 at level 5. A starter helmet and an endgame chestplate cost the same to enchant with the same rune.
Which slot should get my best rune?
The weapon, every time. It returns the full value of the rune, while body armour returns 60 percent and a helmet returns 40 percent for exactly the same gold.
Is upgrading a rune always an improvement?
No. The wiki is explicit that raising a rune's level rerolls all of its hidden values at once. A higher level offers a better possible range, but a lucky low-level rune can beat an unlucky high-level one, so compare before you swap.
Can I move a rune to a different item?
Not in any useful sense. The Rune Crack item, used at Milo's enchant area, takes the rune off the gear but destroys it rather than returning it to your inventory.
