What this page helps you decide: whether the light helmet and heavy chestplate split is worth it at your current gear tier.

Armour comes in two weights and the trade-off is stated plainly. Light armour is the cheapest to forge, scales slightly worse and carries noticeably less health, and plenty of players use it precisely because the low ore cost lets them re-roll sub-stats more often. Heavy armour costs the most, has both higher base health and a higher scaling ceiling, and its only real drawback is the mountain of ore that good rolls demand. The common recommendation for most of the game is a light helmet with a heavy chestplate. The data tables let you check what that split actually costs you, because both wikis publish base health for every piece. Forty-seven chestplates and thirty-three helmets are listed, and thirteen chestplates plus two helmets carry an unfilled default rather than a real number, which we mark rather than print as fact.

The helmet ratio changes as you climb

Matching each helmet to the chestplate that shares its name gives twenty-nine complete sets, and the ratio between them is not constant. At the bottom of the table the Starter, Wayfarer and Chieftain sets all sit at 58.8 percent, meaning a helmet carries a little over half the health of its chestplate. The Legion, Centurion, General, Imperator and Cinder sets are at 66.7 percent. By the Victory set it is 80 percent, by Noble it is 87.2 and at the top the Void set reaches 91.4 percent. That trend has a practical consequence for the popular light-helmet, heavy-chestplate build: the health you give up by wearing the lighter helmet shrinks in relative terms as your gear improves, so the split is at its most expensive exactly when you are poorest.

Where the health curve jumps

Chestplate health climbs gently for most of the table and then steps. From Starter Vest at 17 through Victory Vest at 40 you are looking at a slow progression across twenty-six pieces. Judgment Plate at 58 is a 45 percent jump over Victory in one step, and from there the curve steepens sharply: Horned Plate 60, Noble Cuirass 78, Doom Cuirass 80, Merciless Shell 98, Molten Armor 100, Magma Plate 103 and Void Bastion at 105. The top of the table is 6.2 times the starter piece, but four fifths of that gap opens up in the last eight items. The same shape holds for helmets, where Judgment Visage at 48 is the first big step and Void Greathelm tops out at 96.

The SVIP armour trap

One more armour type exists that is not in either table because it does not have fixed health at all. SVIP armour scales to 100 percent of the health of your best armour piece, which the wiki describes as making it the strongest armour currently in the game, and it is only obtainable through the SVIP game pass. The FAQ on the second wiki records a complaint worth repeating: some players get weaker after buying it. The reason is the same scaling rule read the other way round. If you have nothing good equipped, 100 percent of your best piece is a small number, and the SVIP armour degrades to match. It is a multiplier on an existing collection rather than a shortcut past building one.

Step-by-Step

  1. Work out which named set you are in. The two tables share a naming family, so a Void Bastion chestplate pairs with a Void Greathelm and a Magma Plate pairs with a Magma Helm.
  2. Check the ratio for your tier before splitting weights. A starter helmet carries 59 percent of its chestplate's health, but a Void helmet carries 91 percent, so the helmet slot gets relatively more valuable as you progress.
  3. Forge light for experiments and heavy for keepers. A light helmet is 3 ore at a stated 100 percent, a light breastplate is 10 at 80 percent, a heavy helmet is 15 at 80 percent and a heavy breastplate is 22 at 100 percent.
  4. Ignore the thirteen unpublished chestplates when planning. Their stored health value is 4, which is an unfilled default rather than a real figure, and most of them are cosmetic-looking pieces such as Samurai and Daimyo.
  5. Treat the SVIP armour warning as a real trap. It scales from the health of your best armour piece, so equipping it while carrying nothing good will make you weaker, not stronger.

FAQ

Is light armour better for damage?

No, and the FAQ calls this a common misunderstanding. Light armour is cheaper to forge and carries less health with slightly lower scaling; its appeal is that the low ore cost lets you re-roll sub-stats more often, not that it raises damage.

What is the best armour combination?

Two sources point at a light helmet with a heavy chestplate for most of the game. The matched-set table shows what that costs: at the starter tier a helmet is only 58.8 percent of its chestplate's health, but by the Void set it is 91.4 percent.

Why did my character get weaker after buying SVIP armour?

Because SVIP armour scales from the health of your best armour piece rather than carrying its own fixed value. Equip it with nothing good in your collection and it inherits a small number. It multiplies a collection you already have.

What is the highest health armour in the game?

Among pieces with published figures, Void Bastion at 105 base health and Void Greathelm at 96. Thirteen chestplates and two helmets have no published value at all, so a higher piece could exist without appearing in either table.
