Burn gives a chance on hit to set the target alight for a short damage-over-time effect. The chance, the duration and the per-tick damage all scale with the rune's level, and none of those three numbers is published at any level by any source, which is worth saying before anything else on this page. What is published is the structure around it, and the structure is enough to plan with. A rune pays its full rolled value in a weapon slot, 60 percent of it in body armour and 40 percent in a helmet. Fitting it costs gold on a fixed ladder set by the rune's level, from 2,400 at level 1 to 7,200 at level 5, and that cost is identical whichever of the three slots you use. One rune sustains exactly one instance of its damage-over-time effect, so stacking Burn means carrying more than one Burn rune rather than hitting harder with the one you have.

Why Burn fades and Corrode does not

The wiki gives a clear reason for the shift in rune priority as you progress, and it is about proportions rather than about the runes changing. A damage-over-time effect contributes a fixed pattern of ticks. Early on, when your own attacks hit for very little, those ticks are a large share of your total output. Later, when your weapon has an ore multiplier, a blessing multiplier and several sub-stat lines behind it, the same ticks are a small share of a much larger number. Corrode works the other way round because it raises the damage of everything else you do rather than adding a fixed amount, so it scales with your build instead of against it. That is why the same page recommends Burn and Methysis for the opening stretch and Corrode later.

Proc rate is an attack speed question

There is no internal cooldown on rune procs. The wiki states this directly, and the consequence is that how often Burn applies depends entirely on how fast you attack. A light weapon at three ore per forge attempt swings considerably faster than a heavy weapon at sixteen, so the same Burn rune fitted to those two weapons produces very different results without any number on the rune changing. This is one of the few places where the class choice you made on the weapon pages feeds directly into the rune choice, and it argues for putting damage-over-time runes on fast weapons and saving the slower weapons for effects that do not care about frequency.

Where Burn runes come from

Three routes are documented. The Cave of Runes is the dedicated source, holding four tiers that each produce runes of a different level, taking one Cave Ticket to enter and supporting groups of up to four. Cave Tickets themselves drop from daily quests, and the VIP game pass is documented as doubling that drop rate, which is the only shortcut recorded anywhere in this system. The grocery shop run by Torgar stocks level 3 runes for around 3,000 gold, and its full shelf list includes Burn 3 alongside Methysis 3, Corrode 3 and Frost 3. The season battle pass is the third route. Nothing above level 5 appears in any source, so the ladder may simply stop there.

Step-by-Step

  1. Put Burn on the weapon while you are levelling. That slot returns the full rolled value, and the wiki rates damage-over-time effects highest during the opening phase of the game.
  2. Add a second Burn rune if you want a second stack. One rune maintains one instance of the effect, so the only way to run two is to carry two.
  3. Move Burn to the body slot once Corrode enters your build. The recommended endgame layout puts Corrode on the weapon and the helmet, with Frost or Burn on the body.
  4. Budget the fitting cost from the rune's level rather than the item: 2,400 gold at level 1, rising by 1,200 per level to 7,200 at level 5.
  5. Search for it under both names when reading elsewhere. One wiki page calls this rune Fire, while every other source, including that same wiki's item list, calls it Burn.

FAQ

How much damage does the Burn rune do?

No source publishes a figure at any rune level. Every description says only that the chance to apply, the duration and the per-tick damage vary with level. We would rather leave that blank than print a number nobody can back.

Can I stack two Burn effects?

Only by carrying two Burn runes. The wiki states that a single rune maintains a single instance of its damage-over-time effect, so a second stack needs a second rune in another slot.

Is the Fire rune the same as the Burn rune?

Yes. One wiki page uses Fire, while the rune template, the item list and every other source use Burn. We follow the majority and use Burn.
